Managing Electronic Documents in the United States

As a customer in the United States, you can receive electronic documents directly into Continia Document Capture via email attachments.

In the United States, electronic invoicing is commonly understood as the practice of not printing and mailing invoices via traditional postal services. However, the move towards structured data invoicing began in 2015, when the US Government mandated that federal agencies transition to issuing electronic invoices for goods or services by the end of 2018. To meet this requirement, agencies had to adopt electronic invoicing systems capable of generating, transmitting, receiving, and storing invoices digitally.

The Business Payment Coalition (BPC) conducted a pilot project until 2022 to explore electronic invoicing and establish a business-to-business (B2B) electronic invoicing system in the US. This initiative led to the formation of the Digital Business Networks Alliance (DBNAlliance), which operates similarly to the Peppol organization, employing a 4-corner business model with access points and standardized transportation protocols. The DBNAlliance functions independently and is not linked to the global OpenPeppol Network. While specific formats within this network are not mandated, adherence to the Universal Business Language (UBL) standard is required.
